Cruel Intentions is a 90s teen drama film based on the 1988 romantic film drama Dangerous Liasons, which was a film adaptation of a play from the 80s. The movie centres around the stepsiblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil, played by Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, respectively. The story is a game of manipulation involving the characters and their inner circle, with Sebastian's bet with his sister Kathryn, that he would deflower the new headmaster's daughter, becoming the driving force behind the plot. The film features the hottest teen actors from the 90s, with Sarah Michelle Gellar's performance as the manipulative Kathryn being the standout. The film is not kid-friendly and contains vulgar language and sexually risque 'situations'. The movie has iconic moments, such as the escalator scene and the ending with The Verve's Bitter Sweet Symphony playing that make it a memorable watch. Despite having all the qualities of a fun, tongue-in-cheek teen movie, it is ultimately a modern-day morality tale that shows the danger of deception and manipulation.
